Artificial Intelligence has been a trending topic in the news lately, with society’s views on how AI benefits and harms people fluctuating dramatically over the past few months. Translating that into the school experience, many students have various opinions regarding the use of AI and its pros and cons.
A couple of students shared that their use of AI comes mainly from studying for tests. Sophomore Maura Dolan talked about how AI is beneficial for creating practice questions for upcoming tests. More often than not, students using AI for study purposes have increased their weekly usage of AI tools. A junior shared that this trend in increasing AI usage is due to harder material and trickier exams as the year progresses, creating a stronger reliance on AI tools for studying. Similarly, a sophomore backed up this claim, saying that AI can be used well to perform difficult math and science calculations, which only get more complex as the school year progresses. Another student, involved in the performing arts, shared a more unique use of AI. She detailed how she uses AI to “read synopses of plays and gain an initial insight on her character”, proving useful and efficient when she is busy.
However, a few students shared their recent distaste. Specifically, sophomore Melody Zheng shared that she “never really uses AI, except for those Google overviews.” She went on to explain that she would get rid of the Google overviews if she knew how. Sophomore Maura Dolan also shares that she decreased her use of AI over the school year “due to an increasing understanding of moral concerns.”
For the near future, AI seems to be the stock market of social and political conversations, with its rapid developments and changes. Time can only determine the concrete future of AI, but even a small group of high school students proves that AI is a dynamic, multiperspective topic with a long future ahead.
