Recently in Russia, 28-year-old Darya Shipilova was found positive for the pneumonic plague while working in a lab, which unfortunately resulted in her death. None of her other coworkers were diagnosed with it, but around 200 of Shipilova’s close contacts are being monitored and quarantined. So far, the Irkutsk Research Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia, the lab where Shipilova was working, and the Russian government have no idea what the source for this plague was, or who else may have it.
I spoke to multiple teachers and students to get their idea on the laboratory worker’s death, and the fact that it could spread to other countries. “As long as they put in the proper precaution, then I feel safer.” mentioned Mr.Nolan, and Imogen Boggess (10th) followed up with,”it’s good they’re doing research and giving information to the public.”
While some people are not worried about the plague, others feel differently. Mrs.McCoy mentioned,”It’s not something I will worry about unless it spreads” and Jackson Boggess (9th) similarly said,”I think Russia is crazy and cold. They should see if it spreads to anyone else.” Addy Kunkle (9th) was more worried about the death rather than the plague, claiming it ”makes me sad. That’s crazy there was only one person who died.”
