Every third Thursday of November marks Children’s Grief Awareness, a day to recognize children suffering the loss of a loved one. Many people underestimate how hard it is on a child to lose someone, and how much support they need. This event takes place to help teach the community about grieving children. It helps give these people the knowledge to support the children, and to honor them. Wearing blue is encouraged, as that is the color Children’s Grief Awareness day. This event has been taking place in Avonworth since at least 2019.
Junior Mia Milojevic chose to to their senior project on this event. We reached out to them to ask some questions about Children’s Grief Awareness Day, to which they responded.
Why was this your senior project?
“Well, I have been volunteering for Children’s Grief Awareness Day since I was a freshman so not only did I have experience with the event and how it ran but I also have first-hand experience of the importance this event to many people. I wanted to do something meaningful for my project and I knew this was something I be passionate about. “
What should kids know about this day?
“I think kids should be aware of this day and try to do small things to support is like wearing blue on November 16th or coming up to our tables during LEAD/Lunch to see what they can do.”
What did you see through the process of organizing and leading this day?
“I saw a lot of different things like the other volunteers interacting with the people who came to the event and how that positively impacted them”
What went well, what could be better?
“Honestly, the event ran very smoothly and I believe that the event helped people. One thing that could be improved is not many people know about so possibly expanding the event to places like Facebook or in the elementary school so more people have the ability to donate and show their support.”
