On June 18, 2023, the world was taken aback when a submarine that was touring the Titanic wreck went missing. The debris was found 4 days later, confirming the deaths of the 5 passengers. The Titanic wreckage might be one of the most known shipwrecks world wide, and has captured a wide audience of people interested in it.
The Titan was a project by OceanGate, seeking to capitalize on this obsession. But creating a submarine to reach this wreck is a daunting task, as the wreck is around 12500 feet below the surface, over 2 miles deep. As you get deeper into the ocean, it becomes much harder to navigate as most light is gone past 1000 feet.
As with many deep sea operations, this dive was fraught with danger. But the passengers understood this and went anyways. What they might not have known was that the sub used materials not ideal for deep sea operations. The Titan was touted on its website to have been engineered in collaboration with NASA, Boeing, and University of Washington. After the disaster, these entities denied involvement in the process. Even if everything was perfect, deep sea environments are not friendly to tourists, and this would have happened sooner or later.
