The 2023-2024 Avonworth Varsity Wrestling season was a special team success.
For the first time in a decade, the full team reached the first round of WPIAL playoffs while finishing with a record of 8-9 overall, 4-2 section play. The team brought back two WPIAL Northern Section Champs: Auston Kosanovic and Luke Hollywood along with three WPIAL Qualifiers: Mike Tabano, Mathew Harper, and Luke Maddalena.
Individually, the following wrestlers will have a chance to compete for a state championship – Auston Kosanovic, Mike Tabano, Mathew Harper, Luke Maddalena, Dimitri Velisaris, Angelo Valeriano, Bryce Metz, Jackson Krul, Luke Hollywood, Justin Beck, and Tyler Hanny.
Sophomore Tyler Hanny was asked about his team’s performance: “I thought our team did very well and people didn’t expect us to make playoffs.”
Their quest started with the WPIAL Northern Section Tournament on Saturday, February 18th as sophomore Auston Kosanovic took home the section championship which helped give him the number 1 seed in the WPIAL playoffs. Mike Tabano, Dimitri Velisaris, Angelo Valeriano, Bryce Metz, Jackson Krul, Luke Hollywood, and Justin Beck are the 8 others who qualified for the WPIAL playoffs. Following this, then comes regionals in Hershey, PA. hoping to see Avonworth represented well in Chocolate Town.
